It's Hot Girl Sh1t

For the past two days it has been 17 degrees in London, I can smell Summer. A combination of vegan bean burgers sizzling on the BBQ, room temperature wine being poured into a paper cup at Hyde Park and Bondi Sands fake tan. Summer is without a doubt the best season.

Since 2019 summer has not been just any old summer, it has been hot girl summer. But what exactly is hot girl summer beyond just being an Instagram caption?

According to the trusty Urban Dictionary Hot Girl Summer is the season of bad b*tches; the summer where girls take over and express their inner hoe. Hot girls no longer care for the male gender and are no longer living by social constructs. The hot girl gang sign is made by twerking. In short, it is a summer full of fun.

Megan thee Stallion, the creator of hot girl summer, said it best, hot girl summer is about “just being you, just having fun. It’s turning up, driving the boat and not giving a damn about what nobody’s saying.” She added that “It’s just basically about women—and men—just being unapologetically them, just having a good-ass time, hyping up your friends, doing you, not giving a damn about what nobody got to say about it.”

A summer where you are in charge of your own happiness. Chase the bag and we ain’t crying over no man PERIOD. How could anyone refuse?

Hot Girl Summer is a declaration of unconditional self-love, creative expression, and pure joy. It is a lifestyle choice. Megan Thee Stallion is urging us all to create the reality we want to live in by radically defying patriarchal views of how women supposedly should or shouldn’t dress and act. It’s about holding space for your truth, whatever that means. This movement is especially important for Black women and femmes in the face of misogynoir. It encourages us to explore self-worth and liberation through joyful expression. Hot girl summer is a manifesto.

Wondering how to have a hot girl summer?

The foundation of hot girl summer rests on doing whatever makes you and only you happy. This can include any number of things, from studying or reading to dancing the night away - the beauty of it is that you are in complete control! HGS is a global phenomenon of people being their best authentic selves; not defined by a relationship status or ‘body count’, or anything to do with how you navigate your relationship with your sexuality and spirit and no man or pandemic can stop that. In the words of our now taken Head Coach, Meg, herself: “Hot girl summer... but my man coming to pick me up after.” Hot girl summer has no rules can is, commonly associated with the following.

Self-care. Self-care is one of those things that you can’t easily define, but you know it when you see it. Whether getting pampered at a spa, creating an at-home spa or glueing your face to the laptop to destress, hot girl summer is the time to achieve a relaxed state of mind.

Getting the Bag. Every hot girl needs to work just as hard as she parties and therefore working is such an essential part of the summer. It is about growth and self-development.

Just living life. Hot girl summer is not about necessarily being single, but rather prioritising a good time, being free, doing what you want and looking good but doing it all for yourself, of course.

Of course, there is always time to save the planet. While treating yourself is a major component of hot girl summer, it is also important to give back to the community and environment, following in the footsteps the Megan The Stallion herself.

Hot girl summer is genderless. It's ageless. It doesn't conform to just one particular look, style, body type, relationship status, or behaviour. Whatever it is you do this summer, make sure it includes oozing your hottest, loudest, most extra life—without apologies. Obviously, all the while still respecting all the possible COVID-19 restrictions that may be in place... but hopefully, the 21st June delivers (for the UK).

Hot girl summer is the magic we make for ourselves, and here's hoping the summer of 2021 delivers.
